The Long Day

Overcast conditions and we were heading into the alps. Initial views indicated that we would be driving through low cloud all day. In reality, once we made it into the plateau, the cloud has lifted significantly and it was clear the lakes would be visible. Mt Cook would be another proposition however. The Lakes Tekapo and Pukaki exhibited a striking pale blue hue. Alas, the alpen backdrop was cast in cloud.

With no real intention for where to head, we drove. Then we drove some more. Benmore, Aviemore and Waitaki were lakes of significance we passed and admired. Sources of hydro power.

After a minor moment of anxiety about fuel availability, we merged with the southern convoy at the coast. A sign directing travellers to Moeraki Boulders prompted an inquisition and a false detour. Finally the we saw them.

There was nothing more to do but head south and make it to Dunedin. Feasting late on pizza we are weary but content.
