I’m not just referring to the AFL Grand Final! Friday began with a 7am departure to join a whale viewing boat cruise only to be told that it had been cancelled due to lack of numbers. The refund had to be arranged at the information office which opened at 9.00. The weather was perfect with clear skies so the opportunity was there for a relaxing coffee. Along the stunning coastal drive to Christchurch we couldn’t resist a stop in the Waipara wine region to sample the local produce. A recommendation to stop at the historic Leithfield Hotel was taken up before going into Christchurch.
Christchurch. I didn’t know what to expect. It seemed a mix of ongoing despair and hopeful optimism. The Cathedral Square still resembled an earthquake zone but there were rebuilding projects happening in various pockets. After a walk around, it was time to make our way to somewhere to stay – Akaroa. Beautiful harbour on the Banks Peninsula, a two hour windy, hilly drive which was worth the effort. A freedom camp in the boat yard car park was our site for the he night.
Yesterday the main aim was to find a place the view the GF which ended up being Geraldine which Our launching place for the scenic route pat Lake Tekapo.
