Wanaka to Fox Glacier

Got a late fix of AFL last night with the live telecast at 9.50pm! A tardy start in the morning meant checking out 10.00am then as we went through the gate then pulled over to set the satnav, a little orange light in the shape of an engine caught my eye on the dashboard. Do we risk it or call for roadside assistance? Playing it safe meant a trip to the local auto mechanic. He did some diagnostic analysis, made the orange light go away and assured us everything would be fine. Which it was, although the light came back on half way up to Haast”s Crossing.

The inspirational scenery of Mt Aspiring National Park gave way to the Wild West Coast. The constant site of clear lakes with a backdrop of snow-capped peaks was beginning to wear a bit thin. Our initial plan was to find a bush campsite on the way to the glaciers to stay at. Lake Paringa looked promising: clear water, bright skies, verdant forest and you guessed it, a snow capped peak in the distance. A chat with a German bike trekker became interrupted by swarms of insects looking for a bit of human blood. Maybe this won’t work.

We now find ourselves in a holiday park at Fox Glacier with a happy son who could watch AFL while we cooked tea.
